Starting Your Own Podcast

11/04/2019 12:00 AM by Admin in Tech talks

We are currently living in a world where podcasts play a significant role in various fields. People make use of it to connect with an audience and talk about specific topics, which could range from hobbies and interests to science and technology. Many businesses also create their own podcasts to advertise their products and services. If you are planning to start your own podcast, here are some tips that you can follow for you to have a successful launch.

Content, Niche, and Target Audience

The very first thing that you have to ponder on is what you want to share with the world. You have to make sure that what you are talking about in your podcast will attract listeners.

You also have to create your style and format. Think about if you want to post new episodes every day or once a week. Also, decide on whether you want to do an interview-style podcast or a short-monologue kind of style.

Of course, it is essential to select a specific audience to attract. Although it would be nice to have a lot of listeners of different ages, professionals have noted how being too general on your topic will not do you any favors. Once you've chosen a target market, you should then research their likes and dislikes.

Show Title

You need to have a title that is exciting and possibly witty. However, you should not make one that is too smart that it could be confusing to your potential listeners. It is best to stay simple but at the same time, impactful.

To avoid duplicating someone else's podcast title, make sure that you do your research. Look up the name you want to give your show and see if anything comes up. It is not wise to have the same title since the audience may get mistaken and listen to the other show.

Artwork

All podcasts have a square image that will represent their show. Many people around the world rely on what they see before they decide to listen to your episode. You have to create an artwork that will have an excellent first impression on your potential listeners.

If you make a visually appealing image, your chances of getting featured in directories such as iTunes are higher. It is a way of reinforcing your name and identity to your audience while they are listening to an episode.

Equipment and Recording Software

Since podcasts rely on spoken words, you need to buy an excellent-quality microphone that can provide clear audio to the listeners. It is also crucial for you to record in an area that is free from echo and noise. No matter how meaningful and surprising your message is, it will be useless if your audience does not understand any of it due to the background noise.

Along with the equipment, you should also use recording software that you can easily control and one that allows you to manipulate the different aspects of the audio file. You can use a laptop and connect it to the microphone, or you can also use your smartphone to do so. Just make sure that the quality of the audio file is topnotch.

Editing Tools

You could use separate editing software that can allow you to cut up the audio file into different parts and put them back together with the way you want it. It will also be useful if you decide to record the entire episode into several segments. This is because you may get tired talking for an extended period, or you want to make some adjustments to the script.

With the editing tools, you can insert some music files into the podcast or other sound effects that could uplift the mood of the show. There are many different things that you can edit on the audio file, and using editing software will allow you to create your podcast exactly how you want it to be.

Podcast Feeds

Podcast RSS feeds are vital to every podcast show. It is a script that listeners can subscribe to for them to receive updates to online content. With a podcast RSS feed, your fans will not have to visit the exact website to listen to your new episode. The listeners, once they subscribe, will be notified when you upload a new ep of your podcast.

Podcast directories

There are many types of podcast directories available, such as iTunes and Google Play. Once you've uploaded your first episode, you should immediately send the feed address to any of the podcast directories. Take note that you will not have to send the same address every time you have a new episode. All you have to do is the initial setup, and all the directories will automatically be notified of your updates.

Setting up a Website or Blog

An excellent idea for you to reach and communicate with your audience is creating a website solely for your podcast. You can upload your show, audio, and even transcripts of each episode on the site. Through the website, you can ask questions or recommendations from your avid listeners. By doing so, you show them that you value their input and that you want to create a more audience-centered show.

These are the essential things that you have to prepare and consider before launching your podcast. However, the most necessary preparation to be made is within yourself. You have to be determined and committed to bringing quality content to your listeners.
